Ghana coach, Chris Hughton says Majeed Ashmieru is not the successor of Thomas Partey despite his impact in Ghana's win against Madagascar.

Ashimeru was named in Black Stars squad for their first two games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros while Partey was dropped due to a muscle injury.

However, Ashimeru was introduced into the game against Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The 24-year-old has been praised for his impact on the team's hard-fought win to kick start their qualifiers on a good note.

Hughton speaking after the game said believes Ashimeru and Partey are totally different players who both have unique abilities which complement the team's performance.

"I wouldn't say Majeed is a successor to Partey. Partey is a more technical and creative player and Majeed is a runner. Coming into this game, Majeed had played one and a half games.

"We knew that he was lacking match practice. But he is a player that was good in Angola away from home. We are always looking out for any player that is bringing us something different," he added.

Inaki Williams scored the only goal of the game as the Black Stars recorded a 1-0 win against the Barea.

The Black Stars will depart Ghana on Saturday morning for their second Group I game against Comoros on Tuesday at the Stade de Moroni with kick off scheduled at 19:00GMT.
