Gordie Howe, at 42 in January 1971, was nagged by a rib-cartilage injury that at least allowed him to see more of his hockey-playing sons' games, The Sporting News wrote. Howe retired later that year after 25 years with the Red Wings, and by 1973 he and his two boys were playing for the Houston Aeros of the WHA.
