The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says there is no value for money in investing in the senior national team, the Black Stars.
The conversation about value for money is coming up on the back of Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Usaif, confirming in Parliament that his outfit and the Ghana Football Association budgeted to spend 8.5 million dollars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite this and several other investments in the team, Ghana has failed to qualify out of the group stage in the last three major tournaments.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Ablakwa said, "Mr Speaker, the point must be made that the $3m that was spent on the three matches played, which the team performed abysmally is in excess of what other countries budgeted for the entire tournament.
"Nigeria budgeted $1.8m, Zambia budgeted $2.1m and these are open-source information and here we are. There is no value for money."
