A member of the Ghana Football Association's (GFA) Executive Council, Nana Oduro Sarfo, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) oversaw Ghana's most expensive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
This comes in response to revelations made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who exposed the Sports Ministry's budget for AFCON 2023.
In a social media post, Ablakwa shared an official government document indicating that over $8.5 million was allocated for the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire. Speaking on Asempa FM, Oduro Sarfo suggested that the MP disclosed the document as a diversionary tactic.
"He may have published the details to influence public discourse and deflect our focus from important issues. Maybe he did not like the fact that the New Patriotic Party's Parliamentary Primaries were peaceful, free and fair," Oduro Sarfo remarked.
He further speculated that Ablakwa might be attempting to draw attention away from topics such as the National Cathedral's resumption of work.
Oduro Sarfo asserted that, based on his research, the NDC governments have historically approved extravagant budgets for Ghana's AFCON participation.
"In the history of this country, NDC governments have approved the most outrageous of budgets as far as AFCON is concerned," Oduro Sarfo claimed.
As an example, he pointed out that, despite the prize money for AFCON 2015 being $1.5 million, the NDC government budgeted a substantial $15 million.
