Ghana midfielder, Thomas Partey has shed light on his decision to join Arsenal, citing a desire to challenge himself in the Premier League.
The move, which saw Partey transfer from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal for £45 million on deadline day in the summer of 2020, marked a significant transition for the 30-year-old.
Speaking to Arsenal.com, Partey acknowledged the shift from La Liga to the English topflight as a substantial challenge but expressed his eagerness to embrace it.
"Everybody knows about Arsenal, the profile, and I had arrived as one of the stars, there to help the team to grow," he explained.
Transitioning to a different style of play and coping with the heightened expectations posed additional hurdles.
"All I could do was stay positive, get used to it, and learn to deal with a new situation where everybody expects you to be at your very top level every single day," Partey remarked, reflecting on his adaptation process.
However, he underscored that the allure of testing his abilities in the Premier League was a primary motivator for his decision to join Arsenal.
"One of the reasons I joined though was for that challenge," he emphasized. "I know the Premier League is very tough, but I wanted to feel that challenge, to test myself, and feel capable of doing it."
Partey expressed gratitude for the support he received from his agent, parents, and everyone at Arsenal, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and learning from every experience.
Having spent seven years at Atletico Madrid, with loan spells at Real Mallorca and Almeria, Partey accrued an impressive trophy haul, including La Liga, the Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup under the tutelage of Diego Simeone.
Since joining Arsenal, Partey has contributed to the club's success, securing the Community Shield and aiding the Gunners' quest to return to the UEFA Champions League.
Thomas Partey will hope to be in action when Arsenal travel to the Etihad Stadium to play the defending champions, Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
