Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has disclosed a deep emotional struggle that threatened to split his love for his home country.
Reflecting on the rocky aftermath of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), Gyan bared his soul, exposing the heartbreaking narrative of a near loss of passion for Ghana, a sensation that permanently altered the direction of his career and personal journey.
The Afcon 2008 was staged at four venues around Ghana between 20 January and 10 February 2008. Egypt won the tournament, beating Cameroon 1–0 in the final. The Black Stars of Ghana beat Ivory Coast 4-2 at the Baba Yara Stadium to place third.
"I dont have any regret but I will say 2008 I regretted because Manchester City was there for me to go and sign. I was having problems and my manager said I should forget the African Cup and go for treatment so when I am fit I can go and sign," he told Asempa FM as monitored by Footballghana.com
"I thought 2006 was supposed to be my first African Cup but I was injured that was my first operation I was flown from the camp and Ghana was out in the group stage. So in 2008 and Ghana was hosting that is my first African Cup I felt that it is home and I have to get involved. And it was an opportunity for me to showcase myself in my first African Cup that is why took that risk and when I came too I was injected a lot to calm the pain so that I can play,"
"The way people were criticizing too harshly during the tournament anybody can criticize but going to my mother and those things it is still in my head and I sometimes be very emotional because that time I even told myself if I see a Ghanaian and a Nigerian I will help the Nigerian. I didn't want to see any Ghanaian it was that bad,"
