Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew is addressing the perception that he rarely smiles, revealing his conscious effort to change that aspect.

The 31-year-old clarified that his serious demeanor isn't a sign of anger but rather a focus mechanism during football games.

Acknowledging the feedback from his family, Ayew explained to the Crystal Palace media team, “it is something I am trying to work on. My mum and my aunties, it’s something that they complain about; cheer up, enjoy life, you are doing a wonderful job.

“Well, obviously I am on the pitch. I can’t really smile when I am on the pitch because working. It is hard for me to smile.

“It is something that I am really working on, it does not mean that I am not happy or I am angry with someone. It is just my way of focusing for the game and when I am into the game there’s nothing else I am thinking about.”

He has been named in the Black Stars squad for the first two 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros.
