The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has engaged in discussions with Mauritania's head coach, Amir Abdou, Footballghana.com can confirm.
As part of their negotiations, the GFA is prepared to offer Abdou a monthly salary of USD 45,000, surpassing the $35,000 monthly salary proposed by the Mauritanian Football Federation.
Footballghana.com on Monday revealed that the country's football governing is interested in hiring Abdou for the vacant coaching job.
The Ghana FA is eager to secure the services of the French/Comorian tactician to succeed Chris Hughton, who was dismissed following Ghana's disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Under the former Premier League manager, the Black Stars suffered consecutive group-stage eliminations, culminating in another premature exit from the tournament.
Ghana, placed in a group with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, finished third with just two points from a possible nine.
However, amidst ongoing negotiations, Abdou has voiced dissatisfaction with the Mauritanian media's treatment of him, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
Further complicating matters, the Mauritanian Federation has reportedly initiated talks with Spanish coach Aritz Lopez Garay as a potential replacement for Abdou.
With his current contract expiring on March 1, 2024, time is of the essence in this evolving scenario.
Abdou notably guided the Mourabitounes to their best-ever AFCON performance in Cote d’Ivoire, advancing to the Round of 16 after a stunning victory against Algeria in the group stage.
The 51-year-old was at the helm when Comoros made their debut appearance in the AFCON tournament in Cameroon two years ago, where they secured a memorable 3-2 victory over Ghana in the group stage, advancing to the knockout stage before being eliminated by the hosts in the Round of 16.
