Southampton manager Ruben Selles has confirmed that Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu missed a recent game with the club's B team due to a worsening injury issue.
Speaking to reporters, Selles revealed that the 23-year-old center back was scheduled to play with the second team in order to test his fitness, but was ultimately unable to do so.
Selles dismissed reports from The Athletic that Salisu's absence was due to a lack of commitment to the club, pointing instead to the player's ongoing injury concerns. Salisu's contract with Southampton is set to run out in 2024.
According to Selles, Salisu experienced issues during a recent game against Chelsea, and the problem resurfaced during his time with the Ghanaian national team. As a result, the defender is currently undergoing an injury process to address the issue.
“He went with the national team and had some problems in the past with us like in the game against Chelsea.
"Then when he went with the national team, he felt it again. So when he came back we needed to put him into the injury process. He was expected to play today with the B team to try and get the problem solved, but he didn’t feel great so he is not available."
