Former Ghanaian midfielder, Derek Boateng, has expressed his dissatisfaction with how the Ghana Football Association (GFA) treated former Black Stars coach, Charles Akonnor.
Boateng believes that Akonnor was not given the autonomy to manage the national team, and was instead held accountable for decisions that were beyond his control.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Boateng said, "I feel they didn't help CK Akonnor at all. They controlled things for him but kicked him out when it went bad, and that’s really, really bad."
Boateng played for the Black Stars between 2001 and 2014 and has been vocal in his support of Akonnor. He revealed that he had heard the former coach complaining to someone he was close to, describing the situation as "not the best."
Akonnor was appointed head coach of the Black Stars in 2019 following the departure of James Kwesi Appiah. However, his tenure was short-lived, and he was sacked after Ghana lost 1-0 to South Africa in a 2022 World Cup Qualifier in September 2021.
