Reflecting on his illustrious career, retired FIFA referee Alex Kotey opens up about the intense rivalry that existed amongst referees during his era.
Unraveling the inner workings of the officiating family, Kotey's recollections shed light on the high-risk environment where every call mattered, and the pursuit of perfection knew no bounds.
Alex Kotey, a 2006 SWAG (Sports Writers Association of Ghana) Referee of the Year, has worked as a Referees Instructor, Referee Assessor and also a Match Commissioner.
The retired FIFA referee officiated at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ghana. He has also handled games at the CAF U-20 level and the CAF Champions League, where he handled matches up to the semi-final level in 2007.
"I want us to look back and look at what we did that made refereeing great. During our time refereeing there was competition among us. You want to go in for a game you want to go in there and do the game and come up well," he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com
"But can we say that of today no competition is one thing we want to bring back into refereeing. You must fight for the FIFA badge you must fight for it,"
"It shouldn't be on a silver platter no these are things we want to look at now these days you see a lot of technology that has come into refereeing we want to try as much as possible to bring it into our system here,"
