Experienced tactician, Chris Hughton is the fifth expatriate coach leading the Black Stars of Ghana to an Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Ahead of the 2023 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast, the official draw has been held in Abidjan today.

A few months ago, Ghana’s qualification to the 2023 AFCON was in limbo after two draws against Angola and Madagascar, both away games.

However, after leading Ghana to beat the Central African Republic in September, Coach Chris Hughton ensured that the Black Stars qualified for the upcoming AFCON.

Although he has Ghanaian roots, Coach Chris Hughton can be considered an expatriate coach having represented the Irish national team and spent most parts of his life.

Before him, other expatriate coaches who led Ghana to AFCON tournaments include Otto Pfister in 1992, Ratomir Dujković in 2006, Claude Le Roy in 2008, Milo in 2010 & 2021, and Avram in 2015.

At the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Coach Chris Hughton will make history as the first expatriate to win the tournament for Ghana if the Black Stars are eventually crowned champions.
