Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly has secured a 2-0 victory over Moroccan outfit Raja Club Athletic in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

The match was held in Cairo on Saturday night. The win keeps Al Ahly’s hopes of clinching their record-extending 11th title alive.

Al Ahly’s Mohamed Abdelmonem opened the scoring at the stroke of halftime, heading in a cross from Ali Maaloul. In the second half, the home team looked to consolidate their lead and were rewarded with another goal six minutes before the final whistle.

Hamdi Fathi found the back of the net with a brilliant volley, set up by a lofted ball from Percy Tau.

Despite commanding 60% of the possession, Al Ahly had a goal disallowed for offside. Raja Club Athletic had their chances too, with Mohamed Nahiri’s free-kick saved brilliantly by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy.

Elshenawy was called into action again when Walid Sabbar released Mohamed Zrida through on goal, but he made another stunning save. The two teams will meet again in Casablanca next weekend for the return fixture.
