Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston has charged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to appoint a competent local coach for the Black Stars.

The senior national team is currently without a substantive head coach after Chris Hughton was shown the exit after the team's poor performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.

A five-member committee has been instituted to recommend a new coach to the Executive Council for the Football Association in 21 days.

Kingston, speaking to Graphic Sports in an interview implored the country's football governing body to appoint a competent local coach or an expatriate coach who would be supported by a local coach.

“Find a local coach or someone that we know is for us who is competent, then if you are bringing an expatriate coach, look for one who has the experience to support him [local coach]," he said.

“The coach must do a presentation for Ghanaians to know what he is bringing on board than to say this coach is my friend or the person that recommended this coach is my friend so let’s give the job to him,” he added.

In the same interview, Kingston confirmed his readiness to coach the senior national team.

Maxwell Konadu and Michael Osei are the only local coaches who have applied for the vacant coaching job.
