The Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie, says he cannot put a timeline on when the Black Satellites and Princesses will get their bonuses for winning gold medals at the 2023 African Games.

The U20 male and female football teams are among athletes from ten sporting disciplines to win medals for Ghana at the games hosted in Accra and Cape Coast.

Athletes were promised cash rewards by the sports ministry: $3000 for gold, $2000 for silver, and $1000 for bronze medals before the games commenced.

How much team sports will attract has not yet been disclosed.

The Local Organizing Committee and the sports ministry organized a press conference on Monday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to thank athletes and Ghanaians for successful games.

Speaking at the event, Opoku Bobie stated that he cannot provide a timeline for when the athletes will receive their bonuses.

“It’s a process. You know Ghana, if you work in the public sector you don’t just stand up and go and pick money,” he said.

“It goes through a process. I am not the approving authority. I cannot give you a time frame.

“My job is to get the list and put the figures together and forward same to the appropriate authority and secure approval.

“When I have the approval then I can be sure and tell you tomorrow or today, but I want to assure you and the general public that, bonus of the athletes will be paid.”

Ghana ended the games with a medal haul of 69 – the highest in the competitions history. Before that, the highest Ghana has won is 27 in 1973.
