The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has underscored Ghana's full responsibility for meeting the financial obligations tied to the football competitions at the upcoming 2023 African Games.
During a pre-Games briefing, Ussif emphasized that a significant portion of the contentious "operational expenses" for the Games rests on Ghana's shoulders.
The event is set to run from March 4 to March 23.
The Borteyman Sports Complex and the recently renovated University of Ghana Stadium have been designated as the primary host venues for the Games.
Notably, football matches will be spread across various locations, with the men's games scheduled at the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadium hosting the women's competition.
Ussif clarified that unlike competitions organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), where expenses like accommodation and meals are covered by the governing body, in the African Games, these costs are borne by the host nation.
“Unlike AFCON, where CAF will pay for accommodation for countries participating, in the African Games, it is the host nation that provides accommodation for the countries.
“It is the responsibility of the nation to ensure that they are hosted, they are fed…and we all know the rates of hotels in Ghana. Catering is a major cost component (for operational expenses).”
