With the draw placing the Black Stars of Ghana in Group B alongside formidable opponent Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, coach Chris Hughton emphasizes the critical importance of meticulous preparation and stellar performance for their upcoming campaign in Ivory Coast.
Egypt, finalists in the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations have won the trophy - a record 7 times. They pipped the Black Stars 1-0 in 2010 when the two teams faced each other in the final held in Angola.
"Our expectations are always going to be there and the fact that we haven't won this tournament for quite some time there are always reasons behind that. Generally, the team that has won this competition or any competition are the teams that deserved to win it so that are the facts," he said.
"What we are very conscious of in this tournament as in any Afcon is very competitive there are a lot of teams and when I look at the level of the African countries there is no doubt over a period of time the level has improved.
"We know the competition is high we know to do well there are a lot of factors to go our way but the biggest factor is preparations and performance and it is impossible to do well in this tournament unless you perform well,"
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the 2023 AFCON or CAN 2023 will be held from 13 January to 11 February 2024. 24 countries will compete for the trophy in six venues.
