Head coach of South Africa, Hugo Broos says the team cannot afford to make the same mistakes that cost them a game that he feels was in their hands against Mali in their opening match.
Broos’ boys take on neighbours Namibia on Sunday, 21 January in a crucial TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Group E match at Korhogo’s Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.
Bafana Bafana suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to the Eagles while the Brave Warriors of Namibia stunned group favourites Tunisia to a 1-0 defeat.
Speaking from the stadium ahead of the match, Broos said they could not afford to make the same mistakes and that they were anticipating a tough match against a side that has most of its players plying their trade in South Africa.
“We were very disappointed after the defeat against Mali because we didn’t play a bad game. We know it will be difficult with Namibian players playing in South Africa. The only thing that we cannot do is to repeat the same mistakes that we made with Mali. We can play a good match in both the first and second half," said a motivated Broos.
“They will have morale and be extra motivated, so we are expecting a good game, but we are also working hard and preparing accordingly for a tough match,” he added.
Anything less than a victory from the 1996 champions could spell the end for them, while a win for Namibia could be a rewriting of the history books as they would be making their very first appearance in the knockout stages of the competition after three attempts.
Kick off at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on Sunday is at 20h00.
