Congo coach Paul Put is delighted his players put aside last week's disappointment by defeating South Sudan 1-0 on Monday to revive their 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
Central African Republic (CAR) also picked up a vital win in their qualifier on Monday when they beat Madagascar 2-0 to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the tournament in Cote d'Ivoire.
Coach Put’s Red Devils scored late to stop hosts South Sudan in a Group G match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
France-based forward Gabriel Andrew Joseph Charpentier netted the lone goal for Congo Brazzaville after 90 minutes with a well-taken low shot that beat South Sudan’s goalkeeper Majak Maling Mawith.
A minute before finding the winning goal, the substitute Charpentier thought he had scored with a header, but the goal was cancelled for offside.
The balanced match saw the two teams create few scoring chances. Agwa Okuot Obiech had the best chance for South Sudan when he missed the target from close range after 40 minutes with the goalkeeper beaten.
Vieljeuk Prestige Mboungou also had a clear chance for Congo Brazzaville, but his effort was missed by inches after 55 minutes.
A happy Paul Put said his team had played well and created several chances at goal.
“I am very happy that after losing last week we have worked hard to win and improve our chances of qualifying for AFCON. It was a very difficult game, but we took our chance and won the match,” said the Congo coach.
Stefano Cusin, whose team beat Congo Brazzaville 2-1 last week said his team had been punished for a mistake at the back. “We made a mistake and our opponents got the goal. We also had our chances and did not take them,” added the Italian tactician.
The win sends Congo Brazzaville to second place with six points, table leaders Mali who face Gambia on Tuesday lead the group with nine points. South Sudan and Gambia each have three points.
The Central African Republic also picked their second win in the qualifiers at the Stade de la Reunification in Douala, Cameroon.
Louis Mafouta netted in each half to guide The Central African Republic to a 2-0 win in the Group E qualifier.
“I am very happy that today we have scored two goals and won the match. We need to keep working hard because we have more matches to come in the qualifiers and our target is to qualify for AFCON,” said Raoul Savoy coach of Central African Republic.
The Central African Republic and Ghana each have seven points, although the Black Stars will play away to Angola later today.
