Public pressure has finally forced the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to formally release a statement on Ghana’s chaotic campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire.
The Black Stars' premature exit from the group stage, securing the third spot in a tough group featuring Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, extends the country's AFCON title drought to 42 years.
After eight days of Ghanaians asking the country’s football governing body to apologies for the heavy disappointment, they have finally bowed to pressure and have done so.
In a statement issued on January 30, 2024, the GFA empathized with the disappointment resonating among the passionate football-loving nation, acknowledging that the team's display fell short of the elevated expectations shared by all stakeholders.
The GFA statement stated, "The Ghana Football Association extends our sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana and all stakeholders for the recent disappointing performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations Cote D'Ivoire 2023.
“We understand the disappointment and frustration that such results can bring to our passionate football-loving nation. Our team's performance fell short of the high expectations we all share, and we take full responsibility for the disappointment.”
In response to the disappointing outcome, the GFA has initiated the quest for a new Black Stars Head Coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton.
A dedicated five-member committee has been formed to oversee this crucial process.
