Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu has claimed that the intention of the players was to bring the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations trophy home.
However, they suffered an embarrassing group stage exit after putting up yet another underwhelming performance in competition in back to back tournaments.
Ghana finished third in Group B after an opening day defeat to Cape Verde followed by back to back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
The Black Stars’ wait for a miraculous qualification to the round of 16 through the third-best placed teams ranking was crashed by Cameroon who was supposed to draw but won against The Gambia.
Salisu took to social to say it was unfortunate the Black Stars were eliminated at the group stage.
“It’s with deepest regret that I am writing to you about our disappointing campaign in the 2023 AFCON,” the Monaco defender wrote on Instagram.
“As you all know we went with the intention of bringing the Trophy home but it was rather unfortunate that we were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.
“We gave absolutely everything but we were unable to secure the necessary wins to keep us in the tournament.”
Mohammed Salisu returned to action for Monaco on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in their 2-2 draw with Olympique Marseille.
