Former Ivorian international, Salomon Kalou says Ghana is a giant in African football and therefore deserves to be among the top teams.
The Black Stars are currently competing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The four-time African champions opened their championship with a 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde.
However, the former Chelsea forward speaking ahead of Ghana's crucial game against Egypt later tonight said the West African country deserves to be at the top of football on the continent.
After getting the better of the Black Stars via a penalty shootout to win the 2015 AFCON, Kalou empathized with Ghana’s failed attempts to win a fifth AFCON title after playing in three finals since last winning the title in 1982.
“It’s unfortunate because if you’ve noticed how many times they’ve been in the finals for the past years and losing on penalties, those are the things you can’t control," he said.
“I think that Ghana is a pillar of African football and they deserve to be at the top," he added.
Kalou’s Cote D’Ivoire is hosting the AFCON for the second time and got its campaign off to a very good start by clinching a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in the opening game.
