Ghana began its 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with an expected 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their Group B opening game on Sunday.
The Black Stars conceded two sloppy goals from Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues. Alexander Djiku scored the consolation in between.
Here’s how each player is rated out of 10:
Richard Ofori - 4
Mixed performance from the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper who was rusty from lack of club football. Errors in both goals but made equally important saves.
Denis Odoi - 3
Was exploited for pace throughout the game and didn’t offer much going forward.
Gideon Mensah - 3
Always inconsistent in a Ghana shirt and was reluctant to commit to the game.
Mohammed Salisu - 2.5
Abysmal performance and didn’t show he was fit for the game because of the long time he’s been on the sidelines.
Alexander Djiku - 5
Made very important clearances and scored Ghana’s goal but was also involved in the two goals the Black Stars conceded.
Iddrisu Baba - 3
Was so relaxed in the game and gave away balls at dangerous positions.
Majeed Ashimeru - 4
Showed why people clamoured for him to start Ghana games by scoring an absolute thunderbolt of a goal but was unlucky to have it disallowed.
Jordan Ayew - 3
Too relaxed and should have gone off earlier than Hughton has taken him off.
Joseph Paintsil - 4
One of Ghana’s best players in this match and was one of the Black Stars' best creative players until he was taken off wrongly.
Ransford Yeboah - 2
Hugely underperformed and shouldn’t have come out for the second half.
Antoine Semenyo - 3
Average performance from the man leading the attack and showed he was better off playing out on the wings or off the striker.
Substitutes
Andre Ayew - 2.5
Iñaki Williams - 2.5
Ernest Nuamah - 3
