Former Ghana international Emmanuel Ampiah has expressed disbelief in the Black Stars team ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana are without a major silverware since 1982, and are aiming to end the trophy drought in the neighbouring country.

The AFCON tournament will commence on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024, where 24 countries including the Black Stars will battle it out for the covetous trophy.

Ghana arrived in Ivory Coast on Wednesday and will open their AFCON account against Cape Verde on Sunday before taking on Egypt and Mozambique respectively.

“It’s too early to think about the trophy because the players are not trusted. Anyone who says Ghana is going to win the trophy might have had a revelation. If not for that, then that person really has a lot of confidence and belief” he said.

“We should wait and start the tournament for us to get to a point before thinking about winning the trophy. I can’t say vividly that Ghana is going to win the trophy. I don’t want to deceive anyone, let’s wait and see” he said in audio aired on Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com.

Ghana have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
