The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has addressed and dismissed allegations of physical assault against Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton following Ghana's disappointing 2–1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening game of Afcon 2023.
The loss left supporters and fans devastated, with social media buzzing about reported attacks on the coach.
News circulated on social platforms shortly after Hughton and some members of Ghana’s contingent arrived at the team hotel, claiming that the head coach had been physically assaulted by an upset fan.
According to these reports, diplomats intervened to diffuse the situation, and the unidentified fan was reportedly taken into custody by the police.
Contrary to these claims, the GFA has refuted the severity of the alleged incident, asserting that it was exaggerated and blown out of proportion.
“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach or leave the job,” the GFA said to Citi Sports.
“There was no physical confrontation and certainly no arrest was made.”
Despite the controversy, Ghana's Black Stars find themselves at the bottom of Group B with zero points after the initial round of matches. Looking to regain momentum, they are set to face Egypt on Thursday, January 18th, in a crucial bid to steer their tournament back on track.
