Former Ghana defender Emmanuel Ampiah is advocating for a fearless leader for the Black Stars ahead of the 2023 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars arrived in Ivory Coast on Wednesday and will open their AFCON account against Cape Verde on Sunday before taking on Egypt and Mozambique respectively.
Sharing his thoughts about how Ghana can perform at the AFCON, the former Black Stars defender clamored for a fearless leader who can control his teammates on the field play during matches.
“If we don’t get one person to control the team, thinking we are professionals it won’t help us. We need to get a player who is fearless to control the entire team. In every team there is a player who controls his colleagues on the field of play.”
“So we need to get someone who can put his playing mate on their toes, correct players on the field. When we do this I believe the team will do better” he said in an audio aired on Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com.
The Black Stars will compete for the covetous trophy in neighbouring country, Ivory Coast as the search for a fifth continental trophy continues. It is important to note Ghana are without a major silverware since 1982.
Ghana have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
