Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey says he is confident the Black Stars can pull a surprise at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations next month.
The Black Stars will be competing for the covetous trophy in neighbouring country, Ivory Coast as the search for a fifth continental trophy continues.
Ghana are placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
Speaking to Sienu TV monitored by Footballghana.com, the 1991 FIFA U17 World Cup winner expressed with the support of the Ghana FA and the entire Ghanaian populace, the Black Stars can pull a surprise in Ivory Coast.
“I have followed the team a bit and I think the coach has assembled a good young material with couple of experience that I think yes, if we are able to go to camp earlier, I’m sure we can perform. We have a very good team with experienced coach, the coach knows the team well so I’m sure with the support of the FA and Ghanaians, although people are doubting but I strongly believe we will pull surprises in Ivory Coast” he said.
“If football, you can never say never. Some countries are coming up; we’ve seen a lot of surprises with the small countries. I’m a Ghanaian but things are not going well as people want it to be but then, this will also be a time that we can cause a surprise in Africa”
The Black Stars have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.
