During the FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar will experience around 1,600 plane landings and take-offs every day, according to Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) Air Navigation Department Director Ahmed Al Eshaq.
This is nearly double the current 750-800 flight movements each day, making Qatar the Middle East's second busiest country in terms of aviation traffic, he noted.
In an interview with Al Sharq, Eshaq confirmed Qatari air navigation's readiness for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in a highly professional manner, indicating that all procedures related to Qatari airspace and the flow of aircraft movement and air control are in line with the operational intensity requirements during the World Cup.
He emphasized that all workers in the field of air traffic control have received intensive training in accordance with the highest professional and technical standards in order to manage Qatari airspace in an efficient and professional manner, emphasizing the importance of the Qatar Air Traffic Control Center's role in enhancing training operations for air traffic controllers in order to improve their capabilities and professional competence in order to keep pace with the expected heavy traffic.
According to Al Eshaq, as part of the preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the number of aircraft parking lots has been increased to improve capacity at the airport, which is in line with the program and plan set by Hamad International Airport management, and is expected to be completed by the end of August. He mentioned the installation of the latest technologies in the Middle East, the "virtual tower," which will help to eliminate the need for regular watchtowers in the future.
He went on to say that this equipment may be deployed anywhere and that it can guide the aircraft via displays and the device. Except for Qatar, he added, there are no equivalent devices in the Middle East, adding that a number of advanced radars have also been installed at Doha Airport and Hamad International Airport. The two new radars will be installed at Hamad Airport soon, adding to the enhancement and support of aircraft movement on the runways during takeoff and landing.
He stated that because of advanced technological devices and the efficiency and professionalism of air traffic controllers, who have the ability, operational efficiency, qualitative qualification, and highly reputed training and professionalism, the safety rates in Qatari air traffic movement reach 100 percent. He also claimed that the Air Navigation was equipped with a big number of sophisticated gadgets, which were built in order to keep up with the predicted rise of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Al Eshaq stated that any update or change to the air navigation system is done in consultation with Qatar Airways, which plays a role in setting these routes and changes in its simulator to test them and notify Air Navigation if the procedures are appropriate or need to be modified to ensure the smooth movement of aircraft, emphasizing the success of this experience due to the plans, operational programs, and advanced and modern devices that are currently activated.
He added that the gap between ancient and modern air navigation is considerable, suggesting that the difference is due to the advanced technology of present air navigation equipment compared to their counterparts from the previous 10 years.
Ahmed Al Eshaq, Director of Air Navigation Department at Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), completed his remarks by noting that the existing equipment assures and improves the safety component of aircraft traveling in Qatari airspace by facilitating air and ground mobility.
