The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Constituency, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has expressed his support for the decision by government to tax winnings from betting and games of chance.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Tuesday, August 15, announced that the implementation of a 10% withholding Tax on the gross winnings from all Betting, Gaming, Lotto, and other Games of Chance has started.
The tax has been imposed in line with the Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) Act, 2023 (Act 1094).
The announced has received a lot of resistance by the youth on social media in the last 48 hours.
For Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak betting is not a good thing but if people are earning income from it then the tax imposed on it is a good thing.
In an interview with Angel FM, the Asawase MP argued, "Betting is haram and taxing is a way to develop the country. Anyone who earns income from working deserves to pay tax, so the question is don't they get profit from betting?"
He continued, "If it was their capital that is being taxed that will be the problem but it is rather the earnings that are being taxed. I get taxed for the income I earn from working, so why don't they want to pay tax?"
Despite the criticism, government has stuck to the implementation of the 10% tax on betting profits and winnings on all games of chances.
